Introduced as the TVS Akula 310, the concept model was revealed for the first time at the 2016 Auto Expo and from there on, it has always been in news. According to the recent reports, the new model is expected to be launched in the second half of this financial year. This clears the cloud over the most-awaited product from the third largest two-wheeler makers in India and it is most likely to hit the showroom before March 2018.
The India-bound motorcycle has been spied several times and has been on news with various rumored launch dates. However, it is likely to get a new badge named ‘Apache 310’ with notable changes in the design elements of the concept model. It is the first ever 300cc bike from the manufacturer.
TVS Motor Company is jointly working with BMW Motorrad to develop a different product on similar platforms. BMW has joined hands with the company to get a local production partner in order to manufacture and export its products. At the same time, TVS is also encashing on the reputation of BMW on the Indian soil.
The upcoming motorcycle was recently spied and the picture revealed some of the vital details of the product. It featured a matte black color scheme with a stylishly designed body and looked like a real eye-grabber. So, before you make up your mind to buy the upcoming model and wait for the launch, you can go through the detailed information, features and specifications of the TVS Akula 310.
The Indian-spec upcoming bike is designed under the joint venture of TVS and BMW. The production version looks to retain most of the design elements from the concept-model, while some new elements have been added to give it a more aggressive look up front. It is a sports bike with full-fairing and is designed based on the highly stiff frame chassis and has an aluminium sub-frame. The aluminium sub-frame makes the body lighter, which results in better dynamics and power. However, the production version misses out on the carbon fibre body, which was present in the concept avatar.
The design of the motorcycle looks to be stylish and trendy, as the spy pictures suggest. It looks to be low in height as well. It features cast alloy swing arm, which not only aids handling but also enhances the ride quality. In addition to all these, the two-wheeler features two newly designed headlamps with daytime running LEDs at the front fascia. It also features a tall and neat windshield at the front, as a protection against wind bursts. It is specially designed to be more of a road-focused product, while the dorsal fins are expected to increase the bike’s aerodynamics. This looks to be the bigger version of the Yamaha R15 and has borrowed the exhaust canister from BMW G310R, which was also jointly manufactured by TVS and BMW. The upcoming model is expected to receive a set of new alloy wheels.
The list of safety features available in the TVS Akula 310 is quite impressive and provides acute safety to the rider. Starting from the front, the bike comes equipped with inverted forks, rather than the conventional telescopic forks. This has a certain advantage over the conventional one, as it provides more rigidity, stability, reduced unsprung weight, reduced stanchion friction levels and caliper mounting. The bike features a monoshock at the rearend as the lone shock absorber. Coming to the brakes, the motorcycle is equipped with dual disc brakes, which comes linked to an ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) for riders’ safety. The disc brakes with ABS provides security to the rider, during a sudden application of brake when on high speeds.
The upcoming sports bike from TVS is the first of its kind from the manufacturer, as the manufacturer has introduced a 300cc capacity bike for the first time. It is powered by a 310 cc, single cylinder, fuel-injected engine. It shares the engine of the BMW models and promises to offer a powerful performance. The 310 cc motor of the vehicle churns out a maximum power output of 34 bhp at 9,500 revolutions per minute against a peak torque of 28 Nm at 7,500 revolutions per minute. The engine comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The shifting of gears is smooth and the engine refinement is above par. The gear is positioned a bit behind the seat to provide a sports bike like seating.
The large engine of the TVS Apache 310 offers a top speed of 145 kmph and is expected to attain a speed of 100 kmph from a standstill in just 6.8 seconds.
With the powertrain mechanism and fuel injection technology, the TVS Akula 310 is expected to return a decent fuel economy. The estimated mileage ranges between 25 kmpl to 28 kmpl for city rides, while returns a fuel-efficiency of 35 kmpl on highways.
In the 300cc fully-faired motorcycle segment, the TVS Akula 310 will prove to be a strong competitor. Being manufactured on the platform of BMW bikes, it is likely to be a threat to the most likely rivals, which includes the KTM 390 Duke, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Yamaha R3.
Is the wait worth it?
The TVS Akula is expected to be priced competitively within a range of Rs. 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom) to Rs. 1.8 lakh (ex-showroom). The production of the bike is done at the home-based manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, which is also one of the major reasons behind the lower overall cost of the product.
The upcoming motorcycle is certainly the best work from the TVS Motors Company till date. It is expected to pay tribute to the 33 years of the rich racing history of the company and is going to be the start of a new journey in the fully-faired bike segment.
The most anticipated bike from the two-wheeler maker has already created a lot of buzz among people and is expected to perform well in the market. And why not? It has all the ingredients to take it up there in the league of the popular KTM RC390, Yamaha R3, etc. We expect this long wait to come with some fruitful results, as the design, specifications and safety feature together make it a great option to be considered within the price segment.
